What is a Parathyroid Scan? 

This scan is looking at your Parathyroid glands. The scan is usually done to find out the reason for high calcium levels or high parathyroid hormone levels.

How do I prepare for a Parathyroid Scan? 

There are no preparations. Please let our staff know if you are taking any multivitamins or medications for your thyroid.  Please also inform us if you had any scans that involved an injection or a drink of contrast in the 6 weeks prior to your appointment.

What happens during a Parathyroid Scan? 

You will be given a small injection of a radioactive tracer and pictures of your neck will be taken for about 45 minutes. You will be then asked to go for a break for about 3 hrs and return for another injection and some pictures of your neck for about 45 minutes.

Are there any side effects of a Parathyroid Scan? 


How long does a Parathyroid Scan take? 

About 4 to 5 hrs.

When can I expect the results of my Parathyroid Scan? 

Results are usually ready the next day.
