What is an Oesophageal Transit Study?

This scan is used to look at whether the time it takes for food to pass through the oesophagus is normal or slow.

How do I prepare for an Oesophageal Transit Study?

Fasting from midnight.

What happens during an Oesophageal Transit Study?

You will be given a small spoonful of jelly with the radioactive tracer in it, you will be asked to swallow this jelly whilst we take pictures. We will repeat this process 2 times and the pictures will be about 45mins to 1hr.

Are there any side effects of an Oesophageal Transit Study?

No

How long does an Oesophageal Transit take?

The first component will be 1hr, the second and possibly third component will be 45mins to 1hr each.

When can I expect the results of my Oesophageal Transit Study?

Results are usually ready the next day.
